I had the privilege of photographing the beautiful Keilani for both her engagements and bridals. When I first met up with her she "warned" me that she felt awkward in front of the camera and needed "a lot" of direction. I beg to differ...she and her fiance (now husband) were both complete naturals! I hardly had to give them any guidance at all and their chemistry was so apparent!

They got married in beautiful Hawaii this past weekend, which I would've have been there to photograph if I wasn't 9 1/2 months pregnant...a bittersweet situation.

But I was thrilled to be able to work with them as much as I did and couldn't be happier with the photos!

The Levin Girls at Gardner Village

I have had the privilege of photographing the Levin family for the last 4 years and every time it gets better and better. I've been able to watch their oldest daughter, Ava, grow up into a beautiful little lady and now they have two adorable 1 year old twins, Elyana and Kaia who are so much fun to photograph!

In June I met up with the Levins at Gardner Village and took pics of all three of their girls. They are soooo photogenic! I just had to share some of my favorite shots from the session with you.

I had a family portrait shoot this last Saturday and I am obsessed with the way the lighting turned out on this one! It was a morning shoot in a gorgeous overgrown field with super tall grass, the wind was blowing and the sun was glowing, it was delicious! :)

Although the wind was frustrating me because my lightstand kept blowing over despite the 20lb weight bag I had on it, and there was a two year old involved which always make for an interesting session, and let's just say, she did her part keeping me on my toes. But, overall, I'm really happy with the way these photos turned out and I just can't get over the beautiful golden light in these photos.

Fun Fashion Shoot!

I had a fashion shoot the other day, my favorite, and up until a few hours before the session I had NO IDEA where I was going to shoot! Yeah, that happens sometimes. I just get so tired of my usual places or sometimes my favorite places become inaccessible or overcrowded and when I shoot at the same places too often, I lose inspiration. I wanted something kind of grungy and industrial, I actually had a place in mind but it closed at 5 at which time I'd lose access to it, so I was getting a little bit desperate for something cool yet not over done.

So I found myself driving aimlessly searching for a cool scrap yard, warehouse or industrial site that would A. be accessible and B. inspire me. Just as I was about to give up and resort to shooting at one of my usuals spots I came across the coolest abandoned house. We photographers are suckers for a good abandoned house and good ones are getting harder and harder to come by these days. So I was stoked to find this place tucked away, off the beaten path, nestled on a giant over grown field (another location type I have an absolute weakness for) and the best part? It's not even 5 minutes away from my house! Score!

So, I had the perfect combination for what was bound to be an amazing shoot; a rockin' location, a beautiful subject and spectacular lighting. Due to this crazy weather we've been having, we've been blessed with some pretty awesome skies and sunsets and this particular evening did not disappoint.

So here are the results of what has gone down in my book of favorite photo sessions.

Exciting News!

I am happy and excited to announce that I am going to be offering photography and Photoshop workshops starting in April!

I have teamed up with a Photoshop professional, Cindy Wyckoff, Editor-in-Chief of Scrapbook Dimensions Magazine, and together we will be teaching a workshop to help people enhance both their photography and Photoshop skills.

Over the years I have been asked by so many people how I do certain things, what equipment I use, how I got started, where I learned photography etc. So I've decided that the best way to help both photographers who are looking to get more serious with their talents and pursue it as a career, and even just the mom's who own nice camera's and want to be able to take good photos of their children or pets, is to offer a class that virtually ANYONE can take and find useful. Then I thought, why not take it one step further and show people some simple tools in Photoshop to help with their post production knowledge that will enhance their photos even more!

I just feel like there are so many people out there that are being held back because they don't have a full enough understanding of the basic principles of photography that can make or break a photograph and I want to teach those people the basic foundations of photography that will help them progress and expand on their hobbies and talents.

Top 5 Reasons People Don't Book Photo Sessions

There are people out there who are loyal "picture takers", people who's homes are filled with professional photos of themselves and their families. People with beautiful memories that fill their walls. Then there are those people who often want nice pictures taken, but are held back for one reason or another. Here are the top 5 reasons that I have found keep people from booking professional photography sessions and my rebuttals to them.

5. "I Can Take The Pictures Myself"

How many of you have ever thought this when contemplating booking a photo session? Yes we live in a day and age where the digital camera is just as common in the household as a toaster and with scrap booking and photography such fast growing trends, there are a lot of moms out there documenting every second of their family's lives. But there is a BIG difference between family snapshots, and nice professional family photos. And let's face it, even a professional photographer, like me, can't always take ALL the photos themself, there's really only so much you can capture with a tripod and a timer. My husband and I are getting our photos taken by a professional this weekend. Because even though I can, and have, taken our photos myself before, I can't really get the candid, emotional shots that I love when I'm trying to be both in front and behind the camera.

So even if it's only once a year, it really is a wise (and stress-free) investment to hire someone else to take your family pictures for you.

4. Not Enough Time

This, in my opinion, is one of the worst excuses out there. There are 365 days, 52 weeks and 12 months in every year. If you can't find ONE day out of all of that to book a portrait session, then you need to better prioritize your time. Photos are an investment, in a fast paced, hectic world, a picture is able to stop time in it's tracks and freeze a moment forever. there are so many life changing and memorable experiences in life that how can we NOT find time to capture them? Weddings, graduations, baby's being born, baby blessings, birthdays, family reunions, anniversaries etc. Far too often do I hear people telling me how they regret that they never got newborn photos taken of their babies, or that they haven't had a family photo taken since their oldest daughter was born, 12 years ago!

It's easy to let time slip by, if you allow it, but a family portrait session is the perfect reason to put your crazy lives on hold, come together as a family and capture a moment you can cherish and look back on forever.

3. "I Don't Like Pictures of Myself"

I know a lot of people who don't prefer to be in photos because they don't like the way they look or think they're not photogenic. I think this is a selfish mind set. Photos aren't always just of one person, and if you haven't booked a family portrait because you don't like how you look, then you're depriving both yourself and your family of important memories. I can understand being insecure and that a photograph can be a very vulnerable thing, but having a nice photo taken of yourself can also be an uplifting and empowering experience. Often times people don't like how they look in photographs because they over think it and look awkward and stiff. A good photographer knows how to capture people of all different shapes and sizes. They know how to work with angles, lighting and posing that is flattering to you and makes you look good in pictures. If you have a good photographer and vocalize your insecurities with them, they will help you to feel comfortable and confident during your session and the more comfortable and natural that you feel, the more you will like how you look.

2. Weight

This one falls in line with the previous reason, most people who feel they are overweight don't like getting photos taken of themselves. Way too often I hear people say "I really want family photos taken....but I want to lose x lbs first", or "I want to take pics with my newborn, as soon as I get the baby weight off". Next thing they know it's been years and they still haven't had a portrait taken, family or otherwise. Losing weight can be a difficult and timely process, and while I can understand wanting to look good and be in shape for your pictures, at the same time, if you wait til you're "perfect" you may never get pictures taken again. I still have clients I'm "waiting' on that keep telling me their gonna get photos taken soon, "just a few more pounds" they tell me yet I've been hearing that for years. I think it's all about priorities and what's really important. Looking super stick thin for your pictures and passing up multiple opportunities to document the years with your family, or being a little heavy but having years of photos with your family as they grow? Again, if you find a good photographer, and express your weight concerns with them, they will help you feel and look good in your photographs.

And the number 1 reason most people shy away from getting professional photos taken is....

1. MONEY

Yes, professional photography can be expensive, but let's talk about why. As a professional photographer I work and have been working extremely hard to learn and improve my skill and knowledge. Photography is an art form, an expression of ones personality, attitude and style. A good photographer knows how to capture someone in their true and unique form. There are a lot of people out there who think that a nice camera=nice photos, but that is simply not the case. While photography is about learning, knowing and understanding your camera, it is also about lighting, posing, angles, knowing how to frame and capture your subject and it's about learning how to deal with and interact with people. Making people feel comfortable, look natural and be themselves in front of a camera. There is a technical, a creative and a business aspect of photography and not all photographers are mastered in all three aspects. A good photographer is in touch with their own personal style and flare but doesn't limit themselves to one particular way of shooting. Photography truly is an art from that is not only learned, but mastered.

Photography is also expensive on the photographer's end. We have constantly evolving products we have to keep up with, and camera equipment isn't cheap. Camera bodies alone can be $1000's of dollars, then we've got all the different lenses that allow us to capture images differently and uniquely. We've got lighting, props, camera accessories etc. If you want nice professional images, you need a photographer who has high quality equipment. Everything we own and use costs us money, then you have to factor in our time as well. For me, photography is my lively hood, it's my full time job and main source of income. I am extremely passionate about what I do and have taken years to develop my talent. I work hard to ensure that each session is a fun and genuine experience, so underselling myself wouldn't be fair to me or my clients. Often times in the photography world what you pay for, is what you get. If you choose to be cheap and go with someone who charges next to nothing, then chances are, that's what you're going to get. Discount photos that often lack a lot of style, professionalism and quality.

So next time you think you can't afford a professional photographer, or consider just going with someone cheap, think about if someone didn't want to pay you all the money you work so hard to earn. Like I said before, professional photos are an important investment worth making time for, and if you have to, saving up for, cause you know what they say...

"...A picture is worth a thousand words".

I love high school senior sessions! They are always so much fun. Here are some of my favorite shots from the senior sessions I've done lately.

Meet Wesley. He lives in Henderson Nevada and I wanted to do something that really displayed Vegas at it's best. What do you think of when you think of Las Vegas? The desert and the many bright lights. So what better places to go then Red Rock Canyon and Fremont Street!

This is Keley, she was awesome at her shoot! So fun and outgoing and easy to work with. Keley is a super senior, she does absolutely EVERYTHING! Academic, athletic and of course, musical. Keley plays the violin, among 4 other instruments, so we decided to incorporate that into her shoot and I think it turned out really cool!

This was my second time working with Kiya, I photographed her mom and brother earlier in the year and had such a blast the first time that I was super excited for the opportunity to work with her again! Kiya totally rocked her session! She looked beautiful, and was up for anything I suggested. I absolutely love the way her photos turned out.

Lisa had a vintage look with her lace dress, knit gloves and birdcage veil, so in keeping with that old fashioned style, I shot her bridals in one of my favorite locations, an old abandoned house in AF. Lisa is the epitome of the type of bride I love to shoot! Down for anything, super photogenic, and full of awesome ideas! I felt like we were totally on the same page during the whole shoot and even though we were in a dirty, old, spider infested house, she was up for trying any and all of my suggestions! Just wanted to share some photos from a few of my recent photo sessions.

This is the Wyckoff Family.

My Uncle Lance, his wife Juli, their 3 GORGEOUS daughters, Ashley, Kirsty and Maddi and their handsome son, Lance Jr. along with his brand new wife, Valerie. I got to take their family photos back in early August and they were so much fun! It's crazy to see my cousins all grown up now. I remember when most of them were born! Now they're attending high school, college, even married! They've all grown up to be absolutely beautiful and I really enjoyed taking their pictures!

Meet the Scott family. One of my favorite families to photograph because they're all so outgoing and always so much fun to photograph! There is never a dull moment with these guys!

This is sweet little Ava. I have been photographing Ava since she was only a few months old. I have to admit, I've had some bad luck taking Ava's photos in the past, it seemed like every time I'd pull the camera out, she'd begin to cry. Now, at 2 years old, I was finally able to get a whole session with nothing but smiles!

Ronan Magnus Clifford: With a name like that how could I not take his photo in a wooden crate that says "HERCULES" on it? Nothing more manly than that! I loved taking this little guy's pictures! He was sooooo good for me! I was worried because he was about 4-5 weeks old by the time we did this shoot and I usually like to get them in the first two weeks their born. But he was such an angel! I love his big blue eyes and red hair, and he has some pretty awesome parents too. :)

Bear Lake 2010

I had the privilege this summer to go to Bear Lake on two separate occasions and do some family photo sessions for a few different families. I had never been to Bear Lake before now and had no idea what to expect. When I got there I was completely inspired by the beautiful scenery and could not believe how blue the water is! I had so much fun on both my trips up there and was able to make each trip a mini vacation that included jet skiing, boating, tanning, good food, great company and amazing weather! Just another day at the office.... :)

My first trip was at the very end of July with the Groll family. Here are some of my favorite shots from their session:

I also got to take some maternity photos out there and am SO excited about these pictures. First of all, Betze is gorgeous so it's impossible to take a bad picture of her, then add that to the incredible scenery and beautiful sky we had that night and you get a perfect recipe for a great session!

Sunsets and Wildflowers

Meet Signe:

She has been my best friend for almost 27 years. She's beautiful, talented and has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I know. We've had our ups and downs, but she has stuck with me through all of it.

I found an amazing field of yellow wildflowers the other day and just HAD to shoot there! I was too anxious to wait for my next shoot, so I asked Signe if she'd be up for doing a little "modeling". Having never done anything like this before, she was a little hesitant, but excited. I wasn't sure what to expect since she hasn't ever been put on the spot quite like this before. It was one of those days where everything was perfect. The weather, (aside from some crazy wind), the lighting and the incredible sky. Signe was a natural and I had sooo much fun shooting her!

I apologize for not having updated this in a while, here are some shots from a few of my favorite photo sessions that have been keeping me so busy lately:

Aubryanna and Brennan were such a great couple! We went to Wheeler Farm to shoot their bridals and when we met she warned me that they were "an extremely awkward couple to photograph", which can sometimes make my job a little difficult. But when we arrived and started shooting, I found that a little direction was all they needed and my job was going to be pretty easy after all.

Awkward? I'll let you decide....

I met Michelle and Jeff at the Thanksgiving Point Wedding Expo and they really stood out to me, one of the few couples I remembered from the show. I think Jeff has one of the best mom's I've ever worked with! She's so fun and cute and Michelle and Jeff are so easy going and up for anything! Here are some shots from their engagement session at Star Mill...

Meet the Millar family: 2 boys, 3 girls and a whole lot of patience! We went up the canyon to shoot this adorable family and though the mom was a little worried we weren't going to get many great shots due to the size of her family and the ages of her children, I have to say that I'm very pleased with the turn out, and her kids were so photogenic and easy to work with!

Brandon and his son Braxton have been coming to me for their photos for the last 4 years. Brandon is one of those clients that I love because he's up for anything and steers clear from the typical and the norm. This time around he wanted some family photos of him and his son along with his beautiful girlfriend and her 2 kids. Knowing that Brandon likes different and unique, I took them to an abandoned house and an antique shop in American Fork. This is another shoot I'm super excited about and absolutely LOVE the way the photos came out!

One of the best parts of my job is having an incredibly GORGEOUS sister, who is always ready and willing to be my model at a moments notice. One place I have always wanted to shoot at, is the Lavender Fields in Mona, UT. I didn't have a shoot last Friday, which is rare, and I was feeling extra inspired that day, so I grabbed my sister and off we went! This is probably one of my absolute favorite shoots and I'm SUPER excited about the way these photos turned out.

She was in the hospital on bed rest pregnant with twin girls during the promotion and with all the time she had on her hands, she was able to get in a lot of friend and family participation in the contest and all her hard work paid off! She won the shoot for her beautiful daughters, Kaia and Elyana Levin, who were born on April 19th, 2010!

We got together last night for their much anticipated and hard earned photo shoot. I was pleased to see that they were both asleep when they got to my studio, thinking I'd have an easy shoot...you'd think I've been doing this long enough to know better by now.

Needless to say, when working with babies they're never as easy as you hope and with twins, it was double the trouble! Don't get me wrong, they were sweet and adorable, but it seemed like every time we got them situated one would start to fuss. As mom worked on settling that one down, the other would start to act up. What was supposed to be (in my head) an easy one hour, turned out to be a long and bumpy two hours. But never the less, I enjoyed every minute of it and can't wait for my next opportunity to photograph these beautiful babies!

I always love shoots that are out of the ordinary. The more dramatic and crazy, the better with me. I welcome people's unique ideas and spontaneity. This was one of those shoots.

Amy came to me with a crazy Alice in Wonderland sort of idea and it totally rocked. I loved everything from her crazy hair and makeup, to her willingness to try any pose I put her in. She was super easy to work with and really knew how to move with the camera.

Chelsey and Bradyn - Engagements

I took these engagement photos back on March 2. We started up the canyon, then took a few at Temple Square, where he proposed, and ended the session down at the Great Salt Lake. They are both super photogenic and easy to work with. I had a lot of fun with this shoot. The weather, despite a little wind, was awesome that day and the timing could not have been better as we caught an amazing sunset to finish off the shoot!

Theresa and Larry - February 24, 2010

I had the privilege of photographing some of my favorite clients down at Shaw's cove at Laguna Beach this past week. I first met Theresa and Larry back in September 2007 when they hired me to photograph their wedding, in beautiful Millcreek Canyon. They are an older couple with so much spark and charisma, I had so much fun working with them and capturing their wedding. About a year later they hired me again to take some fall portraits of them so we went back up Millcreek and took some fun shots with the beautiful fall foliage. Now, two and a half years later, they have since relocated to California and hired me once again to take some portraits of them.

Last Wednesday was the shoot and the weather could not have been more perfect. We were the only ones on the beach and the shoot was stunning and as always, so much fun!

Booking your wedding photographer

Did you recently get engaged? If so, it's time to start planning the most important day of your life! One of the first things you should book is your photographer. There are a few things to consider when looking for a photographer, and I have dedicated this blog post to helping you find the perfect wedding photographer.

First, figure out your spending limits. It's always good to have a budget when planning a wedding, but I strongly urge you NOT to skimp on your photography budget. Remember that no matter how beautiful your flowers are, or how delicious your cake may be, your wedding photos are your biggest investment because after all is said and done they are the only things you have to look back on. Your wedding photos will forever preserve your favorite moments from your big day!

Second, figure out what you like so you know what to look for. There are a TON of wedding photographers out there and each of them have a different style. Some are more traditional, some more modern and edgy. Some prefer the classic black and whites while others use more bold striking colors. Some use a lot of posing and others just shoot candids. So look through magazines, ask your friends who took their wedding photos and check out some wedding expos to get a feel for what's out there and what you like.

Third, schedule a consultation. Now that you know what you like and have found some photographers that you love, if you're having a hard time deciding, set up a time to meet with each of them to talk about your wedding and give the photographers a good idea of what you like and what you're looking for in a wedding photographer. Find out who's flexible on dates, prices, and packages. See if they offer the copyright release with your wedding photos. Some photographers do provide this, which gives you the ability to print and use the photos however and wherever you'd like, so it's a HUGE bonus. However, not all photographers give that up, so make sure you find out if the photographer you like, provides the copyright release. Also, don't be afraid to communicate with the photographers so they know exactly what you like and what you don't like! Any photographer that is not willing to cater to YOU and your style, is not worth working with. Some photographers out there have a certain style and certain "poses" they always use no matter who they are working with. So make sure the photographer you choose is willing to work with you, cause you don't want your photos to look like everyone else's.

Finally, and most important, now that you've found a photographer you like and have decided to go with them, MAKE SURE YOU SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THEM! I strongly recommend that you stay away from any photographers that do not require you sign a contract when you book them! Unfortunately there are a lot of scammers out there who are taking advantage of the wedding and photography industry and I've heard way too many horror stories from brides that did not protect themselves with a contract. So make sure they have one and read it over very carefully. You want to make sure that the contract not only protects the photographer, but that it also protects you!

Planning your wedding should be fun but it can get stressful. So hopefully this will help in at least one of your planning steps and take some of the stress out of it.

15 Reasons why I love my job

Here are some of the reasons I love my job, in no particular order...

#15: I get to work from home.

I don't have an office with a desk or cubicle that I have to sit at all day. When I'm shooting, I'm either in my studio or enjoying the great outdoors, and when I'm editing I get to do it from the comforts of my own home. (Usually in bed, with my dogs :) )

#14: I don't have to wake up to an alarm clock (usually)

Unless I have a shoot first thing in the morning, it is very rare that I have to set a time to wake

up. I typically get to make my own schedule and do things at my own pace.

#13: I don't have a boss

I do not have to report to anyone nor do I have anyone breathing down my neck or shouting orders at me. Sure, I have deadlines and clients to please, but my business is MY livelihood, I'm not working for someone else's success, and that is a great feeling.

#12: I get to be artistic and creative

I don't have a mindless job pushing buttons or filing papers, I have a job that allows me to be me. To have fun, think outside the box and be creative. I have a career that continuously challenges my way of thinking, with different angles, lighting and perspective. I get to express myself through my art and it is very liberating.

#11: I am constantly evolving

Photography is an ever growing industry that never stops evolving. I think back in the time of Ansel Adams and the masterpieces he created with such simple tools. Just think of what he could create today. This industry keeps me learning, growing and improving. No matter how much I know, I still have so much to learn. I will never know it all, therefore I can never stop progressing.

#10: It pays the bills

What could be better than doing something you love on a daily basis? Getting paid to do it! Yes, sure this is an obvious pro about my job, but when it really comes down to it, I could not be more grateful to have a job that I not only love and have a passion for, but that pays me enough money to be able to do it full time. I worked really hard to get to where I am and it is very rewarding to be paid for your talents. I appreciate those that support me and others in pursuing their dreams.

#9: I get to travel!

Not only do I get to shoot at cool places around Utah locally that I probably wouldn't have otherwise been to, but I have also had the privilege to shoot in Southern Utah in places such as Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef. I have also been blessed with the opportunities to shoot all over the country in place like Vegas and California as well as out of the country such as in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do, and when I get to combine business with pleasure, there's really nothing better!

#8: I have an instant gift!

No, I'm not saying I'm gifted, but being a photographer sure does make birthdays, holidays and anniversaries that much easier! Photo shoots, and custom photo albums and cards make the best personalized gifts that are easy and still mean a lot. It also means I don't have to hire a professional to take photos of my kids when I have them, why pay someone to do something you can do yourself!? hehe

#7: I get to meet a lot of different people and see a lot of different things

Since I have been in this industry I have met a lot of really famous, influential and just down right cool people. I have also been able to experience and see a lot of cool thing. In the almost 4 years that I have been doing this, I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with and photograph people like Glenn Beck, Dave Ramsey, Kathy Ireland, the Beach Boys, 311, Incubus, Depeche Mode, the current and former Miss Utah USAs and the current Miss Teen Utah USA as well as all the Miss Utah USA contestants. But the even more rewarding part is the brides, grooms, moms, dads, seniors, and babies that I meet on a daily basis. I have also photographed many different cultures, religions and races. I've shot Mormon Weddings, Jewish Weddings, Catholic Weddings, Polynesian Weddings, baptisms, blessings, renewing of vows, and even a 25th birthday party fully equipped with an authentic Mariachi band. I have been so blessed with so many awesome clients, many of whom I now call friends, and have been able to be a significant part of their lives.

#6: The Sky's the limit

Though I shoot mostly weddings and family portraits, I am not limited to those categories. Since becoming a professional photographer I have photographed houses, furniture, jewelry, clothing, pageants, concerts, Christmas parties, birthday parties, company parties, Galas, dances and benefits, baseball games, carnivals, and lectures. I've shot CEOs, actors, singers and models, animals, landscapes, and even plants. So no matter what situation I run across, or what someone's photography needs may be, there's usually a job for me.

#5: It's flexible

Something I am very happy about is that I will be able to be home with my children. When we start having kids, it will be so nice to have a career that allows me to work when I want to and be home with my kids instead of shipping them off to day care or leaving them with Grandma and Grandpa. So even though I'm not a parent yet, can I still claim this as a pro? I think so, it gives me something to look forward to!

#4: I never have a case of "The Mondays"

Every day is like a Friday to me, and when I have a shoot, I look forward to it. So I never find myself anxiously awaiting the weekend, or dreading the end of a Sunday.

#3: It's interesting

The wonderful world of photography is quite an intriguing one. I love that I have a job that has depth to it, it's fun and interesting and you can make it your own. There are so many endless possibilities with photography. The more you know and understand your camera, the more you can do with it. You can take the same photos a million times and have it come out different every time.

#2: I can do it here or there, I can do it anywhere!

My job is not limited to the boundaries in which I live. I can take photos right here in my home town, or on the other side of the country. If we ever move, I know that I can continue my photography business wherever we end up, and that is a very peaceful feeling.

#1: It's stands the test of time and money

One of the most beneficial and reassuring things I have come to learn about my job, is not only that I will be able to do it forever, but it has proven to be recession proof. (For the most part) Don't get me wrong, people's budget's have definitely tightened during this tough economy, but even during rough times, people are still going to move forward with their lives. They're still going to get married, celebrate birthdays, have babies, and throw parties. Those moments are still just as precious to them now as they were before and people still want their most precious memories captured forever. I cannot express what an honor it is to be one of the people that gets to be there to witness when two love birds say "I do", when a teen celebrates becoming an "adult", or new parents enjoying their newborn. And to get it all on film is the most rewarding part of all.

I truly am very passionate about what I do and how I do it. Photography is not just a means to an end for me, it is not just "an easy way to pay the bills" nor is it just something I do for fun. I take my job and my business very seriously and I have worked very hard to build my livelihood. The satisfaction I get from taking a beautiful photos, is nothing compared to the satisfaction of a happy customer. I cannot thank my clients, friends and family enough for helping me pursue and achieve my dream.

Here are some shots from a wedding I photographed about a week ago at the Salt Lake Temple. This was probably the coldest photo shoot I've ever done. My hands were completely numb 20 minutes into the shoot, but I got some great shots so I guess it was worth it.

I love this time of year, the smells, the colors, and getting ready for the holidays. Though I love the summer time, shooting weddings, and enjoying warm weather, after the chaos and heat of August winds down I start to welcome the slower seasons and the beautiful fall colors. It's the perfect time of year to get the family together and take some pictures.

But now the leaves are starting to fall from the trees like the snow and it's suddenly become drastically colder. So as fall comes to and end, so does family portrait season.

A Jewish wedding I photographed back in August at the Point. It was beautiful and unique and Jennifer and Steve were so much fun to work with. Other than accidentally referring to the bride's sister as her mother (oops), I had a blast!

This little girl won the Baby Idol Contest on KOSY.com and a free portrait session. You can see why she was, she was SUCH a doll!

Tyler and Laura Broadbent, some friends of mine from Utah County wanted some updated family photos in a unique, urban setting. So we shot at the old ice and storage building in downtown SLC and at some old train tracks. Their little boy, Bayler, is such a stud and so fun to work with!

Carly's bridal session at Memory Grove. She's beautiful and easy to work with. I've had the pleasure of photographing her Uncle's wedding back in June of 07 and recently her Aunt's wedding in August. Carly's wedding is this Friday and I'm looking forward to it.

Benefits, Expos and Cruises

I just wanted to tell everyone about a couple of exciting things that I will be a part of.

First off, the N.E.C. Group is putting on their annual Home Remodeling, Landscape Show and Art Fair this weekend at the South Town Expo Center. During the show they will be having a charity auction benefiting Utah schools.

The auction will be Saturday, August 29th at 7:00 pm inside the Home Remodeling, Landscape Show and Art Fair. Aside from the auction they are having a wall mural competition (the murals will be auctioned off) and 8 artists who will be painting and selling their original art at the show. The show runs Friday the 28th from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Saturday the 29th from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm and Sunday August 30th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Attendees that bring a new un-opened school supply will receive $3.00 off their admission price. Admission is $6.75 for adults, $4.00 for seniors, and children 12 and under are free.

I have donated a family portrait session that includes the high resolution CD of all images to be bid on during the auction. All winning bidders will write out their checks to the school of their choice. It doesn't matter if the school is in Tremonton or all the way down in Blanding, as long as that is the school they want the money to go to, it will. Not the districts, not the PTA or educational foundations but the schools. "If you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it"

I for one, became a photographer because I have a very deep interest, intrigue and passion for the art form and I can honestly say that I truly love my job. There is no greater sense of accomplishment than being paid to do something you love, something that drives you and above all, something that makes you completely happy. I know a lot of people, photographers included, that are just "in it for the money", doing their jobs because "it pays the bills," or just plain thought it would be an easy way to make a quick buck, but they lack the most important aspect of a successful career...passion. I am a true believer that nothing great can be achieved in life without passion. I also strongly believe that there is no reason anyone can't have a career doing something they love and that makes them truly happy. I think that is one of our purposes in life, figuring out what drives us, and making it what we do.

I have always known that I love doing what I do, I just didn't realize how much I loved it until recently. I shot a wedding about two weeks ago and met this couple by first shooting their engagement photos about six weeks prior, then I shot their bridals a few weeks later and then, of course, their wedding. And though they were strangers when we first met, by the time I shot their wedding, they were not just clients, they were friends. This is a pretty typical outcome for me when I photograph someone because it is what I strive for, and I think there is a lot to be said about that. I worked with many different wedding vendors when I got married, and though most of them did their jobs very well, I would not consider any of them my friends. In fact I think I've only actually kept in touch with one of them since and it's only because we are both in the wedding industry and run into each other often. I feel that no matter what your job may be, creating and keeping a meaningful relationship with your clients is not only professional, but plays a key part in enjoying your job.

Recently I have noticed more and more that finding someone who really values their job and the work they do is rare and people who are not terrible at their jobs are few and far between. I actually think it takes more effort to be bad at your job, then good because if you really love what you're doing, it will come through in your work. It is blatantly obvious to me that people who do not do their jobs well have no passion for what they do, it's simply a job to them and nothing more. I can't help but wonder why those people stick themselves in a job they do not get satisfaction from doing. I often think to myself "if I ran my business this way, would it be ok?".

Now I'm not writing this entry to pat myself on the back and say that I'm the world's greatest and friendliest photographer, I'm simply trying to make a point that if you truly love what you do, I believe that it shows in your actions and in the way you treat your clients. I also know that there are times when life does require you to work a 9-5 you dread, a delivery job you loathe or a temp job you can't wait to get out of. But ultimately, if you feel you've found what you really want to do, make sure you have a true passion for it and you will find true happiness from it. When the money you make becomes an added perk and not your sole reason for doing your job, when you look forward to waking up and going to "work", when you consider the people you work with friends rather than "co-workers" and when you feel a true sense of joy from serving a satisfied customer, that is when you know you have found a career you love.

That, is passion.

I cannot thank my clients and friends enough for all of their love, support and friendship and all those who helped me in my journey to find and achieve my passion.

Wedding season is in full swing and has been keeping me quite busy lately so it's been a while since I've been able to update this. But that also means I have a lot of photos to share with everyone! Here are some of my favorite shots from my most recent shoots...

Tawni & Cody - Engagement Session - 7/13/09

They were a fun couple who was pretty much up for anything I suggested, even shooting in the middle of the road with cars rushing by and laying on active railroad tracks! Which, if anyone knows me well, knows that's a big thing for me! We started at the Steel Co. Building in the industrial area on the outskirts of downtown and then headed to the Great Salt Lake. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the session.

Stephanie & Ryan- Engagement Session - 7/7/09

This shoot was so much fun because the couple was really fun and photogenic and they brought their adorable pit bull, "Buddy" along for some photos! He was one of the more cooperative animals I've shot and I was able to get some great shots.

Incubus - USANA Amphitheater - 7/16/09

I recently had the opportunity to photograph the Incubus Concert for the second time and got up close and personal with Brandon, Mike, Ben, DJ Killmore and Jose' (Course little Jose's kind of hard to see behind his enormous drum set!). If you didn't make the show, take a look at what you missed!

Ava - Child Portrait Session - 7/6/09

This was my second time photographing little Ava and she is SUCH a doll! She got a little fussy during the shoot but what 11 month old doesn't? She has the biggest blue eyes and the cutest little smile (When she shows it) and I love taking her photo.

Kylee and Sam

I recently had the privilege of photographing my friend and wonderful hairstylist, Kylee and her adorable fiance' Sam. They are both so fun to work with and complete naturals in front of the camera. There is so much chemistry between them that I hardly had to give them any direction.

I shot their engagements on main street and at an old museum in Bountiful.

We then chose Emigration Canyon and the Great Salt Lake as our backdrop for their bridal session. She decided to go with a joint bridal session and have Sam in the photos with her.

A few updates on what I've been doing lately...

I have teamed up with KOSY 106.5 for their annual American Baby Idol contest. Listeners can post photos of their baby idol and have the public vote for their favorite. One of those days...

Saturday morning I photographed a wedding at Log Haven up Millcreek canyon. The weather was perfect, the setting was beautiful and the event even started on time, it was what seemed to be the start of a perfect day.

But, let's not speak too soon...shooting outside up the canyon has it's consequences. About half way through the shoot I was wandering around outside, snapping candids when suddenly I got a very sharp pain in my neck and I realized I had just got stung by a bee on the job. I'm not terribly allergic but I do swell like you wouldn't believe. I got stung in elementary school by stepping on a bee and my toe swelled up so bad I couldn't wear shoes. Sure enough, a few short moments later the spot on my neck swelled up so bad that you'd think I got hit by a softball or something and had a giant welt. So I asked the manager on duty if they had some ice and Benadryl to help with the swelling. After rumaging around for a bit she was able to find some form of Benadryl like medicine. So I took that and kept on working. It worked like a charm as only a few minutes later the swelling decreased dramatically and it no longer bothered me. However, it did have it's side affects. Just about as quickly as the swelling stopped, the drowsiness kicked in. Fortunately I only had about an hour left til I was done, unfortunately I had another shoot to get to.

My second shoot wasn't for another hour or so, so after the wedding I went home and was able to get in a quick nap before I had to head out to my second shoot, which was a portrait session at Murray Park. I mentioned that the weather that morning had been perfect, however as the day went on, dark clouds started rolling in and the wind picked up substantially. When it was time to get up and go to my shoot, I was so tired from the allergy medicine that it was all I could do to get myself out of bed. As luck would have it, as soon as I arrived at Murray Park it started to rain, if it had started an hour earlier, I could've saved us all some time, rescheduled the shoot, and caught a few more z's. But, since we were down there, I thought we'd try and wait it out, but there wasn't a patch of blue sky to be seen and the longer we waited, the harder it rained. Needless to say, we decided to reschedule the shoot for the next day, in hopes that the weather would be better. I rarely shoot on Sundays but it was an extended family portrait session and everyone but one lived out of State and was leaving the next day. So we crossed our fingers, rescheduled for Sunday morning and hoped for the best.

Fortunately Sunday brought me better luck as the weather was perfect and we were able to get in plenty of photos before they had to take off on their long drive home. You can't always win and with this job you have to be prepared because sometimes you just never know what's going to happen. I guess Saturday was just one of those days.

My husband and I just had the amazing opportunity to celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary in what I believe to be one of the most beautiful and diverse places in the world...Italy. Due to our work schedules and Rob's limited time off, we had to squeeze as much as possible into 8 adventure filled days. In that time we saw fast paced Milan, walked the streets of Florence, Siena and a quaint little town in the Tuscany region called San Gimignano, explored the grandiose ruins of Rome, toured the awe-inspiring Vatican City, relaxed on a Gondola Ride through the canals of Venice, took in the history in Verona, and experienced the architecture of Pisa.

Day 1:

We flew into Milan and immediately picked up our rental car and drove to Tuscany. No words can truly describe the beauty of the Tuscany region. The rolling hills, the green valleys, the infinite vineyards...It was exactly how I pictured it, but even more beautiful that I could ever imagine. Once we arrived at our hotel, appropriately proclaimed as the "Charm of Tuscany", we decided to explore the area. So we hopped in our car and drove around until we found a small village on top of a hillside with a castle overlooking the whole valley. It was incredible and we were the only people around.

Day 2:

The next day wasn't as leisurely as we had to see Siena, Florence, Pisa and San Gimignano all in one day. So we woke up early and headed straight to Florence to the Accademia Gallery where Michelangelo's "David" is on display. Though it is definitely a must see due to it's history and fame, I did not expect to be as awe-struck as I was with a statue. David stands in the middle of the grand hallway and really is a sight to be seen. The details and accuracy are incredible and it really did stand apart from all the other abundant statues you see throughout Italy. We were not allowed to take photos in the Gallery, but being the photographer I am, I could not resist, I had to steal at least one.

After the museum we walked around a bit and took in the city. Here are a few more photos from Florence.

After Florence we drove to Pisa to see the leaning tower. Another site that is so much cooler in person. The tower really is leaning and according to history, was built in 3 different stages, all decades apart from each other. The reason for the delay in construction is still unknown.

From Pisa we went to Siena and walked around the cobble stone streets and narrow alleys. It too is a beautiful city and completely diverse from the others.

Next on the agenda was San Giminagno, a small town we were told not to leave Italy without seeing, and it was definitely worth it. It's known for it's abundance in clock and bell towers. Most bell towers in Italy were destroyed in WWII, but San G was fortunate enough to have been far enough away from the War's wrath, that most of it's original bell towers are still standing today. San Gimignano is a very quiet city in the countryside and offered a lot of culture.

Day 3:

On our third day there we headed to Rome. I was and still am blown away at the endless beauty of this country. Everywhere we went we came across one beautiful sight after another. Lush mountain sides, rolling hills covered in foliage more green that you can imagine and trees and crops of every assortment. My favorite however, was the giant fields of wildflowers that would sporadically appear along the sides of the freeway and roads. It was breathtaking, unlike anything I've seen and I could not put my camera down.

Once in Rome the first stop on our agenda was of course, the Vatican. I have been to England, Scotland and everywhere in between and never have I seen such an ornate, detailed and extreme estate. The Vatican was not only grandiose, but gaudy, articulate and excessive. I don't mean that in a bad way, but it's the only way I can think to appropriately describe such a magnificent building. Every ceiling, wall and floor was decorated in excessive art, details, color and beauty. Not only that but it is home to some of the oldest artifacts in the world. We saw things that dated back to before Christ. It truly was a spectacle.

However, no matter how beautiful or detailed the halls, rooms and courtyards were, the single most amazing thing inside the Vatican remains to be the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Again, photos were prohibited inside the Chapel, but as I'm sure you can guess, I snuck one or two. Who can go to the Sistine Chapel and NOT take a photo of what is arguably the most magnificent piece of art in the world?!
After leaving the Vatican we went on to see St. Peter's Square, where the Pope greets his people. That is quite the square, to say the least. I don't even know how many thousands of people it seats, but I can only imagine the chaos when the Pope makes an appearance. We also went into the Basillica at St. Peter's square where all the pope's of the past are buried, that too is a beautiful building.

Day 4:

Day four started with a trip to the Roman Colosseum. That truly is a sight to behold. Everything in Rome is so grand and ornate. To be standing in the middle of a structure that once represented a spectacle of torture and blood shed was pretty incredible. To think that people came from all over just to watch someone die is something I cannot fathom. The Colosseum itself however, is amazing.

We then spent a few hours just walking around Rome, trying to take it all in. We wandered into a Cathedral, checked out a swarm of old ruins and saw the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was unreal being in the center of a city built amidst ruins. A city that once thrived and fell, and is now a tourist attraction, history lesson and home to modern day Romans.

Day 5 & 6:

Onto Venice! Another thing I love about Italy is that every city is so unlike the next, they are all equally beautiful but have completely different things to offer. Venice is such a unique city, with so much culture, diversity and beauty. Of course we could not pass up the opportunity to take an authentic Gondola ride through the canals of such a famous city. We couldn't have chosen a more perfect time for a ride either. The sun was getting ready to set, the tourists had calmed down and the shops were starting to close. It was so quiet and peaceful and really was a great way to see the city. We spent two days in Venice, taking in the culture, the people, the food, the mutli-colored buildings, and of course, making our way to St. Mark's square. Home of thousands of pigeons, tourists, and vendors. It was incredible, to say the least.

Day 7:

The original plan was to drive back to Milan, where we were flying home from, and see the museum Delle Santa Maria, where the painting of the Last Supper is. But, before getting to Milan we stopped in Verona to see the still standing home of Juliet. I even stopped to photograph the famous balcony where she called to her forbidden lover.
Once we arrived in Milan, we had the disappointing realization that tickets to see The Last Supper were sold out for the next two weeks. We tried getting tickets online prior to our trip but had no luck. So needless to say, that was a no go. We now found ourselves at the end of our trip, in Milan with nothing left to do. So, exhausted, we decided to turn the car in early and call it a night. Although the thought of ending our trip by sitting in a hotel room flipping through Italian tv channels until we got tired wasn't exactly appealing. So, at the last minute, as we were driving to the car rental drop off, we decided that Switzerland was a much more enticing plan. Rob's sister used to live in a small lake side town in Switzerland called Montruex, that was only 3 hours away, so we punched that into our GPS and at 4 o' clock in the afternoon, we were on our way!

The drive to Switzerland is no less scenic that the trips we took throughout the country. We were driving through vast Italian towns and vineyards when suddenly we were staring straight at the caps of the Swiss Alps. Caps that quickly became hills as our route climbed in elevation. Once at the border we were surrounded by raging waterfalls and melting snow caps. Let me tell you, the landscape in Switzerland surpasses the beauty of anything I have yet to see. I was literally completely breath and speechless. Never have I been in such awe of natural beauty. It was a photographers dream. The scenery was that of something straight out of a fairytale, completely unreal and more amazing that anything you can dream up.

Once we arrived in Montreux we walked along the board walk of Lake Geneva and found a quaint and authentic restaurant to have our final meal at. I had the best baked lasagna of my life there, and I had to drive to Switzerland to get it. After dinner we took in the scenery a little longer and watched the sunset. It was the perfect way to celebrate another year of our marriage, and end our 8 day adventure to some of the most beautiful places on earth.

What I've been up to lately...

The season has already started picking up, and taking lots of pictures means editing lots of pictures. So, now that I have finished a ton of photos, I wanted to share some of them with you so you can all see what I've been spending most of my free time on lately.

These are two of my favorite clients, Allyson and Shad and their new puppy Dublin. I shot their wedding last September and had the privilege of taking their family photos a few weeks ago. I have to thank them for being so awesome because we actually had to reschedule this shoot a number of times. We got cursed by bad weather and despite how nice the weather was the days leading up to the shoot, it rained or snowed every time we tried to get together. So about 4 reschedule appointments, and from what I understand a handful of doggy baths later, we finally got them taken care of and it was worth that wait! The weather couldn't have been more perfect when we were finally able to shoot.

This is Steffani and Josh, they were married on April 3rd 2009 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Don't let those tame snow flakes fool you, the weather was crazy that day! Steffani's dad was kind enough to hold an umbrella over my camera for me and everyone was being really good sports about the heavy snow and fierce wind. Steffani didn't even mind that it was freezing and she was getting all wet. Very un-bride like of her ;) They were a dream to work with and the snow made for some beautiful photos.

I drove down to Mapleton on April 4, 2009 for a very traditional family portrait session in the comfort of the Burnett home . The family was very easy to work with and their little grandson was a doll!

The Art of Nature

When I started doing photography I initially just wanted to be a landscape photographer because to be completely honest, I didn't think I'd enjoy photographing people. However, once I started, I quickly fell in love with it. In fact, one of the best parts of my job is meeting new people and creating lasting relationships with them. However, I still have a very deep passion for nature and landscape photography. So, whenever possible I try to get out and take pictures of the world around me. I find great inspiration in the beauty of nature. To me, nature is the greatest and purist form of art.

I have been very blessed with a job that allows me to travel quite a bit, which is also a big passion of mine, and traveling allows for many great photo ops. So I decided to post some of my favorite landscape photos that I have taken along the way, and share them with you. I'd love it if you let me know what you think and which ones are your favorite.

Wedding Season

My favorite time of year, when everything FINALLY starts to thaw out, flowers begin blooming again and echoes of "I do" fill the air. With wedding season just around the corner I have been trying to once again prepare myself for the chaos. It's easy to get used to a lax schedule after the rush of the Holidays calms down and I get to enjoy my spare time a little more than usual during the "slow" season. (January through March) Last year in April and May I was shooting at least 4 to 5 times a week and during June, July and August, I found myself shooting just about every day and often had more than one shoot a day. While I do love the work and staying busy, I'm hoping this year I'll give myself a bit of a breather and schedule my shoots with a little more time in between, if of course, the job and the season allows for it. I just got done editing some bridals I shot about a week ago and thought I'd share some of them with everyone.

Meet Linda and Clay, a very outgoing couple that I have had a lot of fun photographing. They will be exchanging vows this Friday at the Lion House which will kick off what I hope to be another successful and enjoyable wedding season!

Starting my Blog

I finally decided to get a blog started to keep everyone updated on my latest photo shoots, specials, events and to share my experiences with you.

While I will admit, I may not be the most eloquent blogger on the world wide web, I have been told I can take a pretty good picture, so I will start by sharing some photos of one of the latest weddings I did. This wedding gave my husband and me the privilege of traveling to sunny southern California where I shot everywhere from San Diego to Orange County. My Clients were Maurice and Tasha Cureton, who got married in the San Diego LDS temple, took family photos at the beautiful La Jolla Cove, had a ring ceremony in front of the cliffs at Crescent Bay Beach in Laguna, and celebrated the whole occasion at a reception in Corona. So, 4 locations, 2 days and over 1200 photos later, here's a peak at what I captured.
